While tunes with distinct Chinese features, whether musically or even lyrically, will always be part of local pop history, “China Wind” (zhongguofeng) is really a novel phenomenon. Above all, China Wind owes its production and circulation as a discursive development to its endorsement by mainstream performers, notably from Taiwan, as much as to its popularity among viewers in Greater China. While China Wind pop is certainly yet to be systematically documented, researched and analyzed, popular and media interest has generally centered on Taiwan-based musicians and lyrics. In this essay, rather than concentrating on what is considered the primary source of China Wind songs, namely Taiwan, we've chosen China Wind tunes that originated from Hong Kong and their songs videos because the primary subject matter of enquiry. Our main concern is, how do Hong Kong's China Wind music videos build relationships hegemonic variations of Chineseness? The decision of Hong Kong is definitely educated by our empirical fascination with the complicated entanglement of cultural and political energy in which the postcolonial town is presumably going through. Simultaneously it is, in theory and in praxis, a correspondence with the ongoing debates on Chineseness-debates on not only what but also who defines it. Our analyses show that while Hong Kong's China Wind pop evokes Chineseness, it also undermines it in two major ways: very first, to render Chineseness as distant gaze, as ambiguous room and as continuing struggles; and secondly, its feminization of Chineseness, checking a space for questions on background and gender performance. Basically, the Hong Kong China Wind we have analyzed right here articulates something very different from a triumphalist celebration of Chinese tradition, value and lifestyle. If China Wind as a whole is really a culturalist task to rewrite Chineseness within an authentic, monolithic and indisputable way, Hong Kong's variant, we argue, is resisting.
